Perks of Internet Communication

Thanks to the array of social media we can choose from, (Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, WeChat etc.) communication is not really a problem and allows everyone to interact more efficiently with each other. Applications like Viber or KakaoTalk allows you to make free phone calls without spending a cent! Remember the old days when there was just texting (SMS), letter writing, and sending post cards? Well, thanks to the internet, there are much more cost efficient ways to interact with others!

Social Media allows us to communicate positively and keep in touch.  For those living far away, they can make use of social networking and share updates with family members and friends. This way, they stay connected and maintain the relationships between one another. There are friendships that can be sustained without any face-to-face interaction. Online social networking has increased people’s capacity for making and sustaining such friendships as well as having more regular communication with family and friends. Many feel that they would lose contact with their friends if they did not use social networking and communicate online.

There are also applications for video chatting/video conferencing (Skype, Facetime ,Google+ etc.) that are useful for in-person meetings. With so much business being conducted, it is critically important to express and discuss industry and ideas beyond these staccato exchanges. In this way, ideas can be discussed, brainstormed and expressed in a freeform and face-to face manner.

Internet communication has helped those seeking to overcome the inhibitions typically experienced in real-life social interactions. Socially anxious teenagers do seem to prefer online self-disclosure as opposed to face-to-face disclosures. Researchers found that the more teens disclose online, the more likely they are to report higher-quality friendships and more friendship-forming behaviours.

Internet communication can benefit greatly but we must remember to be respectful and be in control of our online interactions. Beware of posting anything online that you would normally only disclose to someone you are close to.
